Post #6 of Lock and Key!

Okay so Ruby is 100% falling in love with Nate but we will get to that in a minute!

Obviously Reggie likes Harriet but Harriet is “just not ready to be in a relationship” which is so dumb because sometimes it is worth it to take the risk and just see where you end up. Plus they would be so cute together anyways they way she just overthinks literally everything and he just reassures her, again so cute together.

So in the very beginning of the book we knew that Ruby’s key unlocked the key to the yellow house aka the old house she used to live in by herself once Cora and her mom left. The key is rarely talked about in the book but when Harriet gets inspired by Ruby’s key us readers can start to think of the “deeper meaning” of the key.

So I just searched just to see what it will say, and let me just say, this fits so well for two different meanings. One: Ruby is very closed off, she doesn’t want to talk about her past with really anyone, the key needing to lock the door behind her (her past) and move forward, or she can use that key to still move on but to open up to people. Two: (which is what I said) to use the key to open up about her past and lock that door finally behind her to heal properly. The keys the Harriet can symbolize as the keys to peoples pasts, a different key for a different person, each one fit to their “owner”.

Readers finally reading that Nate and Ruby kissed 13 chapters in.

So When Ruby gets back from work turns out Jamie and Cora like to commit felonies, jk they just go to the Cross’s pool and swim, which is still trespassing but it’s fine, like what is Mr. Cross going to do? Start choking them? yeah no they are good. But Ruby joins them late on finally but of course Cora and Jamie leave, leaving Ruby all alone. Now Cross enters and kills Ruby. So that’s the end of the book the last section is just Nate living without Ruby. If you thought I was serious then I have no idea why you thought that is how the book ended. Okay no for real now, Nate joins her and they swim together and they finally kiss!!!! which honestly took them long enough to do so, I told my momma because a certain someone just doesn’t like responding (ahm Kaitlyn).

The rest of the section isn’t as happy so to say as it deals with Nate’s abusive dad.

So Nate just has to deal with his dad and Ruby doesn’t know how to help or just even tell Nate that she is worried about him. Especially on Christmas Eve (I think) Ruby was just going to give Nate a present but hears yelling instead and when asked what was going on Nate just pushes Ruby away. It is sad to read but then again Nate is probably afraid to say anything against his dad. Again on Valentines Nate had physical evidence that his dad was now hitting him due to the red ring around his neck and a bruise forming on his shoulder. Ruby asks Nate to let her in and if not he should just go back to his house. Of course he took the “easy way” and left, which hurt Ruby but really she should understand the most because her own mom was abusive to her and she should know it is not an easy choice to go against your own family.

There is somethings that I didn’t mention like Cora taking Ruby out shopping the the New Years Eve party but I just thought these moments were the most important to talk about and that it is 2:30 in the morning and I have to be up in like 3 1/2 hours but yeah. I really hope that Nate and Ruby talk it out and hopefully Nate can get out of his abusive household and lock that part behind him with his own key.

Good night ya’ll see you next time!

Post #5 of Lock and Key

Okay, so it has been a while, and now this book is like a puzzle, but there are some pieces missing, aka something big will happen. I am really starting to see a common theme throughout the book: family doesn’t have to be just blood; it can be many different things, and families would do anything to help each other.

In the first few pages, Ruby and Olivia are becoming more friendly to each other, which is good because Ruby needs better friends (ahem, Peyton). They talk about how Ruby was passed out in the woods with what’s his face and that Olivia tipped off Nate where Ruby was, which is like good because we wouldn’t see a Nate-Ruby moment but also not good becauce Ruby was like passed out.

Me reading about Nate being abused and about being right

The biggest thing about this section is how I was right! If you haven’t read my last posts, then I’ll say it here: I was going to be really upset if Nate’s dad was abusing Nate, and I was right! Okay, so Mr. Cross has a really big temper (like we didn’t see that from the way you choked Roscoe), and he started to throw things around while Ruby was still in the room (they didn’t know that). He started to say how Nate was useless, which you should never say to your kids because that messes them up a bit, but thankfully, when Cross walked out, he never saw Ruby. Who knows what he could have done if Ruby hadn’t hid. But Nate did saw that he is really good at hiding the abuse which is so sad to me.

Also Cora was very nervous about hosting Thanksgiving (which is understandable) but she thought that because of her past they wouldn’t like her which if they judge her it is so wrong because like Cora and Ruby never had a Thanksgiving with their family so it was all new to them but Jamie’s family loved her which is good!

Shorter section so there really isn’t a lot to talk about but yeah really good so far!

Post #4 of Lock and Key

The author just needs to give Ruby a break. Everything is back-to-back and she just doesn’t have anytime to breathe.

There is a lot to say but here is the jest of it.

So Ruby has been working for Harriet for a while which is good for her because I mean she can have her own job and not do her mom’s job. But Ruby thinks that Reggie has a crush on Harriet and Harriet thinks that she is just too busy to be in a relationship, which is like bologna because like if you like someone just go after them, what do you have to lose? your dignity? oh well you’ll be fine. Also why does bologna spelled like that, it makes no sense.

Jamie’s family photo (Not really)

You guys, I have an amazing theory about Jamie’s family photo. Do you think that this is what it looked like? With the matching shirts and everything? How he got to do it with Cora and Ruby, still surprises me not going to lie. The fact that he got one for the dog is just so funny to me.

It’s also so sad to me that Jamie and Ruby aren’t really on talking terms, they still talk but not like before. Cora wants Ruby to apologize to Jamie but I think Ruby is afraid of losing Jamie and having him be mad at her forever but she just needs to take that leap of faith that everything will be okay.

OKAY NATE’S DAD BROOOO, I swear I’m going to fight him, he is just so creepy and the fact that he literally choked the dog and goes back to being normal and he does it again while yelling at Nate like it makes me think that maybe Nate is being abused some how? If he his I’m done. And Nate decided to quit the swimming team during his senior year for like no reason, I really hope that does get explained.

Okay, I am done reading this book because THE FISH DIED!!!!!

I am so mad right now the hereon took a fish, it wasn’t explained which fish but I am 99% sure it was the koi fish. Ruby finally apologized to Jamie for what she did and Jamie accepted her apology. But yeah that was this section.

I don’t know what to think anymore. Post #3 of Lock And Key

Okay ya’ll. What. The. Heck.

Okay so Ruby goes to her like ex’s house to have sex with him but doesn’t like girly what are you doing ?!?!?!?!? AND THE FACT THAT NATE’S DAD TRIED TO STRANGLE ROSCOE! Like bud it’s going to be me and you parking lot 5 pm we are totally beefing now. Like he had no right and Roscoe was so scared that in that moment he only trusted Ruby. I’m sobbing.

Me fighting Nate’s dad

Like you, crazy man like, do you need to go to a mental institute because it seems like you do. For putting your gross, grimy hands on a dog, you must be crazy because he was only getting in the garbage calm down. AND that fact he tried to downplay what just happened like no sir you do NOT get off that easily. Me and Nate’s dad are totally beefing right now, I’m going to fight him (Yes I know he is fictional, in my dream I can beat him).

Also Ruby crying when Cora was singing was just so sad because she feels sad about her mom and herself and it is just so sad to read.

Ya’ll Gervais apparently likes Ruby???? hold the phone. Nate likes Ruby not Gervais, and Ruby like Nate because why else would she just stare at him walking to his class totally not stalkerish totallyyy… Ruby you gotta keep it lowkey man.

When Jamie came to pick Ruby up I just can’t help but feel bad for her you know? Like she has been through so much and just being picked up from school is worrying her because the last time she was picked up from school she had to move. She just can’t get a break from everything; just give my poor baby a rest because she needs it. Honestly this just show that you never know what someone is going through and just don’t judge until you walk a mile in their shoes.

At least Ruby got a koi fish so that’s good and I just really hope that the fish doesn’t get taken by the harrons otherwise I’m going to stop reading this book and boycott it.

But Peyton—she was gone, and I mean out of this world. She had the audacity to talk to Cora and Jamie with a high-pitched voice, like “Pull yourself together, man.” She seems off to me, but I can’t really put my finger on it. I will have to see what happens in the next section.

In conclusion, we don’t like Nate’s dad, Gervais likes Ruby, Ruby is basically depressed, Peyton is high, and if the koi fish gets killed, I’m boycotting. But in all seriousness, something I can really take away from this section is don’t judge someone because you would have to walk a mile in their shoes just to understand a sliver of what they are going through.

See ya’ll next time.

Post #2 of now I’m kicking my feet and giggling of section 2 of “Lock and Key”

Okay you guys, I might just like this book not going to lie. So Ruby finally went to her first class of the day right? and meets Olivia which they went to Jackson (their old school) and Olivia started to give Ruby some tips of how to “survive” the school but like later on she basically ignores her like girly what?

So rude, wow Olivia through you guys were going to be friends, but apparently not.

Me reading about Nate

Any who, we see more of Nate in the book and oh my gosh you guys! He totally likes her I swearrrr. He giver her rides to and from school and Ruby pretends that she doesn’t want to ride with him, but I know deep down inside of her, she does like riding to and from school with Nate. But like he jokes around with her and I feel like he is just more comfortable with her and he treats her so well AND he didn’t judge her and left her alone to think about her thoughts, I can just go on man.

But he didn’t have to bring his annoying brother with one time while going to school like bro, what the heck. Then bud starts saying “YoU Can’T EAt iN tHE CaR” like shut up Gervais like no one asked for your opinion, my girl Ruby can eat in Nate’s car even if they aren’t dating (for now 😀 )

Okay you guys the dog, Roscoe, I LOVE HIM oh my goshhhhh. You guys don’t even understand. Like he dosn’t like the oven right? So he hides behind Ruby to get away from the oven and she doesn’t want to admit that she likes Roscoe but I know she does!

me reading section two of the book

All in all I feel like I really do like this book, even though I didn’t like it in the begining because it was a slower start, but now it’s getting really good. I hope Ruby and Olivia become friends, but this book so far had me slamming it shut and going back into it like it’s that good.

I think I will also be seeing a lot more of Heather because she was Nate’s ex, but I don’t know. Maybe she will warn Ruby to stay away from Nate like some jealous ex-girlfriend, and possibly Ruby’s mom comes back to take her back or something because her mom might be a drug addict or something and Nate saves her, I don’t know. I am just thinking of what could happen.

But that is my second post I really do enjoy this book so far, but yeah see you guys next time.

Post #1 of how did I get here with the book “Lock and Key”

Okay what. I don’t know where to begin but oh well. So Ruby (our lovely main character) is skeptacal and says that her new room smells like paint but isn’t bothered by it.

Okay so she likes that smell of paint so what like that totally isn’t weird. Totally normal.

Moving forward. Ruby is very like antisocial and rebel-e, like she doesn’t care that her sister took her in WITH RUNNING WATER AND HEAT! sorry, got a little emotional there. Like, girl, be grateful that you have that man, I may not have heat in my room, but I have a heated blanket that I’m grateful for, gosh. Okay back on topic.

Ruby wondering what the emails are

She is also very nosy and gets involved in people’s business, especially Jamie’s. Leave your brother-in-law alone. Of course, she was distracted by the noise his computer was making, like she was confused and nosy.

Me Reading Ruby deny that the boy next-door is cute

Can we just appreciate how big Jamie and Cora’s house is? Like, dang, you guys are working hard out there. They are for real making “big bucks.” Anywho, Ruby meets the cute boy next door—ooooo so exciting! But then girly says he isn’t cute. Like what?

I have feeling that we will see him throughout the book a lot more! (as if he isn’t the main male love interest).

Also Cora and Jamie’s dog is like a small dog which if you don’t know are the most terrifing dogs as they may be small but they run fast it is scary. getting chased by one of them is like your life flashing before your own eyes. Plus if the dog is old like theirs is you know that you are done for. Because you don’t know if you are stepping on the worng spot and there goes the dog running 115/mph to get you.

I am a little intrested to read what happenes throughout the book but so far it is a very slow start which is a little boring but I’m trying to give it a fighting chance as Kaitlyn says the author is really good but I have no idea how this is going to go.

Reading Lock and Key and why I chose this book Post #0.5

The book I am readin with Kaitlyn Robin is Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen. When Kaitlyn said that the author was a really good writer I was intreaged. Just by reading the inside flap of the book I thought I know it is going to be good. I tippically stick to thrillier book or fiction, but this is a realistic fiction so it will be different but I am willing to try it out. I am a little nervous to try it out as I have read nothing like this, and that I will end up not liking the book. I am trusting Kaitlyn and what I have read so far to help me push through the book and to hopefully like the book. Me and Kaitlyn are both big readers and have read a lot of different book so I think that we will end up being successful with this book as we have each other to understand and just our genral knowladge.

How does The Very Bried Relation of the Devastation of the Indies fit into cultrual encounters and frontiers

Bartolome De Las Casas tells readers about the devastation and injustice the Indies endured when the Spaniards took over their land. The Spaniards were also Christian and tried to convert the Indies to Christianity as they saw them as an opportunity to enslave them as well (De Las Casas 89). As for the Indies, they did not know that this would happen to them when the Spaniards came to the “New World”; the Spaniards knew what they would do. Two cultures are against each other, as they both try to get what they want: The Indies wanted freedom, and the Spaniards wanted economic value and power. They got that power from the Indies as they tortured them and humiliated them as “It is heartbreaking to see those naked Indians…the famished state they are in, fainting and falling down, weak from hunger, men, women, old people, and children” (De Las Casas 90). The unknown for the Indies was when the torture was going to stop when they tried to escape; it was because of the “inhuman, ruthless, and ferocious acts” (De Las Casas 90).
